Hand forged carbon steel arrowhead
Weight: 1 oz (approximately)
Length: 6.5"
Width: 5/8"
Tang: 3/16"
This arrowhead is a hand-forged carbon steel replica, based on originals uncovered in a Viking grave at Birka, Sweden. It is crafted using the same traditional methods that Norse smiths would have employed more than a thousand years ago.
Viking arrowheads came in a variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for a specific purpose - whether for hunting or for piercing armor.
Here are the three main types of Viking arrowheads:
Bodkin Point (Needlepoint)
Broadhead (Leaf-Shaped)
Triangular or Tanged Arrowhead
Arrowheads were fastened to shafts in two primary ways:
Tanged: a spike (tang) was driven into the wooden shaft.
Socketed: a hollow base fit securely over the shaft.
Most arrowheads were forged from iron and often hardened to improve durability. Some examples even bear decorative engravings, showing that artistry and symbolism were valued even in weapon-making.
Historical Note
The people we now call “Vikings” would not have used that term themselves. Their contemporaries referred to them as Norsemen or Danes. The word Viking does not appear in historical texts until centuries later, long after the Viking Age had ended.
