Thor, the Norse god of thunder and war, is one of the most famous figures in Norse mythology. He is the son of Odin and Frigg. During the Viking Age—and even today—people called on Thor at weddings, births, and important ceremonies for his power to bless, renew, and protect. His hammer, Mjølner, is portrayed as the most powerful weapon in existence. For the Vikings, the hammer symbolized Thor’s devotion to freedom and justice, as well as strength, bravery, and honesty. Anyone who bears the symbol of Mjølner is seen as embracing and defending those same values.
In Norse mythology, Thor is said to ride with two enchanted goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr—often translated as “Teeth-grinder” and “Tooth-gnasher”—who draw his chariot as he journeys across the sky.
