In Norse mythology, Freyja is said to have wept tears of gold when her husband was absent. Traditions connected those tears with amber, giving the material a powerful emotional symbolism tied to love, loss, and longing. Amber held an important place in Viking culture. Warm to the touch and glowing when polished, it was believed to offer protection and healing, and was often worn as beads, pendants, or amulets to ward off harmful forces.
Beyond its symbolic value, amber was widely traded across Scandinavia and beyond. Although amber can be extremely ancient, most of the amber used by the Vikings formed around 40–50 million years ago. It was unimaginably old to the people who prized it, making it a natural material that quite literally carried deep time within it.
